WHITEFISH - The Whitefish-Billings Central rivalry balanced in the Bulldogs' favor on Friday.

In a rematch of last year's state championship finale, Sam Donaldson scored twice and the Whitefish defense did the rest as the Bulldogs defeated the Rams 2-0.

"We've been able to have a great rivalry with those guys," Whitefish head coach O'Brien Byrd said. "They're a good program and it was a hard fought match today. It was fairly evenly played. We're excited to get a game like that under our belt in just the third game of the season. We were tested."

Friday's victory was Whitefish's first in five games against the Rams. Last year, Billings Central defeated the Bulldogs 5-1 in Whitefish to claim their second straight state title.

"That was the first shutout of the year for us. That speaks volumes about our defense," Byrd said.

"Donaldson played really well. He rose to the occasion."
