Whitefish girls team champs at Libby
LIBBY - Whitefish had five girls place in the top seven spots to lead the Bulldogs to the team title Friday at the Libby Invitational cross country meet.
Heather Fraley, a Glacier senior, posted the top time and was the lone runner to crack 19 minutes with her winning effort of 18:57.91
Whitefish's Bailey Eaton, 19:01.03, finished second; Jessica Sagen, 19:29.32, third; Stella Holt, 19:59.26, fourth; Carly Schikert, 20:33.52, sixth; and Jackie Cassidy, 20:39.03, seventh.
"For the first meet, we wanted positive results and they did that," Whitefish coach Bill Brist said. "We had two go out front, a good solid top five.
"These girls have been around for four years," Brist added.
"There are not a lot of surprises with them. They've been pretty much money in the bank every year."
Whitefish totaled 22 points. Glacier, 38, was second.
Glacier had four runners in the top 10. Rachel Hart was fifth, 20:20.82; Nicole Brist, 21:06.57, ninth; and Kylee Gibson, 21:23.70, 10th.
In the boys portion of the meet, Sandpoint, Idaho, had four runners in the top six spots to run off with the team title. Sandpoint, 26, finished well ahead of runner-up Glacier, 48, and Whitefish, 63.
"Sandpoint is loaded, they have some great runners," Brist said.
"Glacier has some good runners as well."
Glacier's Troy Fraley, a sophomore, posted the top time, 16:02.76, and teammate Flint Martino finished fifth, 17:07.19.
Glacier's Richie Boyer, 17:37.45, was ninth.
Mathias Komarek had the best showing for Whitefish, finishing eighth, 17:31.18.
"We had five in the top 15, so that was good," Brist said.
"This is a good performance for us. We have a nice mix with seniors and some younger runners."
Libby had one top 10 performer. Jacob Thomas finished 10th, 17:38.11.
"A good time trial for Troy," Glacier coach Mike McLean said.
"Heather had an excellent race. The whole girls team ran well."
McLean called Martino's performance "outstanding."
