Locomotives rally past Whitefish boys

WHITEFISH - Five goals in the second half was too much for Whitefish to make up as the Bulldogs dropped a 6-4 nonconference match to Laurel on Friday despite a strong start.

Whitefish led 2-1 after Mark Stormes scored off a pass from Jack Steele just before intermission, adding onto Taylor Thompson's earlier goal.

But Laurel came out in the final 40 minutes and tallied four-straight goals. Sam Donaldson tried kickstarting the comeback for Whitefish with a goal at 73 minutes. Donaldson scored again in the final minute, but it was too far gone by that point.

"We kind of fell apart out there defensively," Whitefish coach O'Brien Byrd said. "Just simple mistakes, real basic mistakes that I haven't seen us really make yet, and we made a bunch of them in the second half.

"I think quite a few of the guys need to realize that they can play at a higher level even if they are younger," Byrd added. "Today I think they just played according to their age, I guess. We have a lot of young, talented guys out there and we're better than that."

Whitefish heads to Bigfork for a Northern A game at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
