Glacier defeats Flathead for 3rd
GREAT FALLS - The Glacier Wolfpack volleyball team finished third in the Electric City Invitational on Saturday.
The Wolfpack defeated Billings Senior 25-12, 25-18 in the first round, lost to Helena High in the semifinal 25-20, 25-22, then bounced back with a loser-out win over Billings West 25-17, 25-17, then defeated Flathead for third place, 28-26, 25-18.
The Bravettes defeated Bozeman 25-17, 25-17 in their first match of the day, lost in three games to Billings Skyview in the semifinal 25-14, 15-25, 11-15, and bounced back to beat Billings Senior 25-22, 25-22 in loser-out play.
No stats were reported for Flathead.
Lexy Boschee led the Wolfpack offensively. She had four kills against Senior, seven against Helena and six in the West match. Paige Latimer had 65 assists and Cami Mathison led in aces.
"I was pleased with the weekend. I thought the girls competed very well. I thought we learned a lot, we played some great teams and saw some great competition ... and we just continued to improve steadily throughout the weekend," said Glacier coach Christy Harkins.
"I really liked the way our girls competed. I thought they competed hard," she said.
The first game against Flathead "just came down to a battle at the end," Harkins said.
The Wolfpack jumped out early, but the Bravettes fought back and took the lead. Glacier tied it at 22 and the teams fought point by point from there.
The coach also gave kudos to senior setter Latimer.
"Paige didn't come off the floor all weekend - and she did an excellent job all weekend," Harkins said.
The Wolfpack (7-3, 2-1) is off now until Saturday when it plays host at 2 p.m. to Missoula Hellgate.
Flathead hosts Missoula Sentinel on Friday.
