"We would kind of get down, but the girls didn't quit. They tried to stay up," Hammond said.

"Both teams would just fight back and forth. There was no quit out of either team. It was fun to watch (the Vals) play, too. Both teams would make some unforced errors, then hit the ball hard," she said.

The Wildkats (0-2, 0-3) were led by Danielle Gilley with nine kills, two blocks and 12 digs.

"I'm proud of her for stepping up and doing the best she can and leading by example," said Columbia Falls coach Addy Connelly.

"It's hard to lose to Whitefish at home, but as the night went on, they got a little more comfortable out there," Connelly said.

"Our serve receive was pretty good and our hitting was much better (than in recent weeks). We didn't have near as many errors. But just being young, we still have to dial it in.

"Our goal is divisional and it's going to take us awhile to get there," she said.

"Stat-wise, Columbia Falls and Whitefish were pretty close together. But we're just young, inexperienced. There are times of improvement and there is a huge learning curve that is possible. It's up to me to coach them in the right direction.

"But we are making progress. I can't ask for more than that," she said.
