Recalled Similac taken off shelves here

A recalled baby formula was found and then removed from local store shelves.

The Flathead City-County Health Department issued a press release Friday afternoon announcing that department sanitarians found recalled Similac on some local retailers’ shelves and had it removed.

Health officials urge consumers to check the lot number of their Similac products online at www.flatheadhealth.org or call the information hotline at 751-8188.

The recall involved powdered formulas sold in plastic containers and in 8-, 12.4- and 12.9-ounce cans.

Similac maker Abbott Nutrition issued the voluntary recall after discovering a possibility of beetles and larvae in the product.

According to the federal Food and Drug Administration, the formula poses no immediate health risk but infants who consume the formula may experience gastrointestinal discomfort and refuse to eat due to irritation from consuming the insect parts.

Health officials recommend contacting a health-care provider if a child develops symptoms after consuming the recalled formula.

Similac is the primary formula offered to families participating in Montana Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program.

Recalled products may be exchanged at participating retailers or clients may request voucher changes by calling 751-8170 and making an appointment.
