Flathead Valley Community College might be the smallest school competing in logger sports across the Northwest, but the local program is doing more than holding its own.

The logger sports team from FVCC is on an impressive run, winning competitions in Idaho and California against Division I schools recently.

This weekend, the local standouts are back home and hosting the annual Stumpjumper Days competition at the Logger Sports Arena east of Hutton Ranch Plaza on Highway 93 near Kalispell.

Fifty-six students from four colleges and universities in the Northwest, including The University of Montana, University of Idaho, Colorado State University and FVCC will compete in axe throw, horizontal hard hit chop, obstacle pole buck, single buck and bonzaii logger, among much else. Competition starts at 8 a.m.

Event participants will be competing for the Bull of the Woods, Belle of the Woods and Top Team Awards. FVCC has hosted the annual competition since 1972, with the exception of 2006 when the new arena was under construction.

The purpose of logger sports is to acknowledge the rich history of forestry and logging and keeping those traditions alive. Community members are invited to attend, and admission is free.
