Glacier boys first, Flathead girls 3rd in track

MISSOULA - Kalispell flexed its track and field muscles on Saturday.

Jacob Leininger was named the outstanding male track athlete of the day and the Glacier boys had their best showing to date at the Missoula County Invitational.

Flathead junior Tess Brenneman had the best long jump of the season statewide with a 17-foot-6 3/4 inch winning leap. That was better than her winning mark at state last year of 17-6 1/2. Brenneman also won the 200 on Saturday. Teammate Kwyn Johnson won the triple jump and Flathead was third with 82 points.

Leininger, a senior, swept the hurdles and ran on the second-place 400 relay team. Glacier totaled 101 points, almost twice as much as the second place team, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, which had 58.

"I'm extremely happy with the way our seniors are leading and competing and teaching the younger kids. That's what you hope for as a coach," Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said.

"Overall, program-wise, our kids are figuring out how to compete and how to train and that's carrying over to the meets."

Three dominant field eventers picked up big points. Kyle Griffith won the triple jump, Shane Freese won the high jump and Tanner Morrison won discus.

Flathead, led by Zach Perrin, finished fifth with 49 points. Perrin outdueled Sentinel standout Jake Turner in the 3,200, clocking 9:30. Turner came out ahead in the 1,600, winning with 4:26. Glacier's Troy Fraley took fourth and qualified in the 3,200, breaking 10 minutes with a huge personal-best 8:49.

Flathead and Glacier will compete on Tuesday at Columbia Falls starting at 2 p.m.
