Flathead's Tucker Moe eyes the ball in the air before serving it over the net.

Flathead's Glenn Strickler and Glacier's Cami Mathison both finished second on Saturday in the Main Draw of singles play at the Kalispell Invitational tennis tournament.

The Main Draw featured the top three singles players from the five competing schools, which also included Missoula Big Sky, Hellgate and Sentinel, all in the same bracket.

There was also action at No. 4 singles and doubles.

"Each weekend he keeps improving," Flathead coach Buck Measure said of Strickler.

"As a freshman, he just shows really good poise and overall the ability to adapt to new players and new situations. He's very mature for his age."

Tony Mayer of Hellgate defeated Strickler in the final, 6-1, 6-1.

Dani Sheridan of Big Sky defeated Mathison in their final, 6-4, 6-2. Mathison normally plays doubles.

Glacier was missing Liana Bates, Kellen Bates, Hailey Blalack and Katya Kulikova, who were all in Las Vegas for an Intermountain Tennis Association Easter Circuit tournament. Hellgate's Alex Braun was also in Las Vegas playing.

Glacier's Veronica Walton missed this event because of a family commitment.

"We challenged kids to play different competition levels," Glacier coach Josh Munro said.

"A lot of them took it pretty well. It was a unique challenge and good preparation for divisionals, which uses this format."

Glacier's Conner Watterud finished second in No. 4 singles while Quintyn Menegazzi and Izaak Castren were runners-up in No. 4 doubles.

Flathead's other top showing in singles play was turned in by Barrie Sugarman. She fell to Mathison in the seminals, 7-5, 6-4.

"She's very happy with her performance against very touch competition," Measure said of Sugarman.

"(Mathison) is a well-rounded player."

The Bravettes doubles team of Andrea Battello and Annie Marshall also lost in the semifinals of the Main Draw.

"Our whole team today showed a lot of improvement," Measure said.

"The kids had a good attitude coming off the court, even after they lost the match."

Even though the invitational began at 9 a.m., play was eventually called because of darkness in Main Draw singles and doubles matches for girls and boys in consolation play.

No team scores were kept.
