Cool crosstown at Glacier

A third opponent showed up to the crosstown track meet at Glacier High on Tuesday.

The Wolfpack didn't act surprised.

Wearing the coldest-looking track singlets in town, the Glacier boys claimed the title of best track squad in town.

Led by a near sweep in the field events, the Wolfpack beat both Flathead and the unforgiving cold wind for the first crosstown victory in the program's four-year history, 74-71.

"Being a new program, there's still a lot of firsts out there. Our boys knew that we still hadn't beat Flathead. They knew it," Glacier coach Arron Deck said.

Glacier won six of seven field events, led by double-winner Kyle Griffith, who maintained his dominance in the long and triple jumps.

On the girls side, the competition was neck and neck, yet again. The Bravettes ended up edging Glacier 76-68, winning for the second straight year and third time in four years. Three of the four contests have now been decided by eight points or less.

"It's exciting of course. This is always a little more emotional of a meet for the girls, so it's a little bit sweeter victory for them," Flathead girls coach Kirtlye Lohof said. "It was cold out there. I have some empathy for

Glacier. They get some wind out there."

The first crosstown meet held somewhere other than Legends Stadium had impressive marks despite the unwelcome wind.

Two athletes made history on their home turf. Shane Freese and Heather Fraley become the only competitors to win all four years of the Kalispell-only dual. Freese was once again king of the high jump and Fraley won the 1,600 with a season best time and state-qualifier.

"It feels pretty amazing," Fraley said.

Glacier's Tanner Morrison won the discus for the third year in a row.

Flathead junior Tess Brenneman checked off another event on her state-qualifier list. Running relatively by herself, head wind and all, Brenneman won the 400 in 59.89, making that her fourth event she has surpassed qualifying standards in. The only event remaining on her To-Do list is the 100. Brenneman also ran on the winning relay teams.

"She was a determined girl today and she ran like it," Lohof said.

Glacier sophomore Andrew Nelson shined in his return to the track after being sidelined by a hamstring injury the last three meets. Nelson won the 100 and then pushed through a gusty finish to win the 1,600 relay for the Wolfpack in the final event.

"My teammates put me in a good position and I got to finish it strong," he said. "My hamstring was really tearing me up. But it feels good to come back and get a win."

Flathead sophomore Kwyn Johnson turned in one of the best triple jumps statewide with a 35-10 1/4 and also won the long hurdles.

Hunter Schutt and Rich Boyer went toe to toe in the 800 with Schutt inching out the victory at the finish.

In another impressive race, Zach Perrin held off Troy Fraley in the 1,600. Perrin cruised to another victory in the 3,200.

Anna Deleray won both the girls 200 and 800 for Glacier. Dani Davis won both the 100 and 100 hurdles for Flathead.

Flathead senior Connor Thomas had another victory in the shot put.

Other boys winners were: Flathead's George Sherwood (200), Nick James (110 hurdles) and John Collins (300 hurdles) and Glacier's Travis Komenda (pole vault), Todd Odgen (javelin) and Nick Cramer (400).

Other girls winners were: Glacier's Rachel Hart (3,200), Leah Cook (high jump) and Lexy Boschee (javelin) and Flathead's Monique Cannady (pole vault), Kelsey Davis (shot put) and Brittany Earnest (discus).

Glacier will compete on Saturday at the A.R.M. meet in Whitefish while Flathead will head to Missoula for a triangular against Missoula Hellgate and Sentinel.
