Columbia Falls, Eureka wrestlers dominate Lucey tourney

EUREKA - Columbia Falls and Eureka finished 1-2 respectively in the team wrestling standings at the Buzz Lucey Memorial Tournament on Saturday.

Columbia Fall had four individual champions and finished with a team best 180-point total.

Eureka was next with 113 points and three individual champions.

Weight-class winners for the Wildcats were: Cody Hader (125), Colton Grove (130), Kohl Thompson (152) and Jacob Babcock (215).

Winning titles for the Lions were: Garrett White (105), Zach Durden (112) and Nikko Bakkila (119).

Libby, third with 117 points, had two individual champions - Garret Chapel (140) and Gunnar Moe (189).

Glacier, fifth with 106 points, had two winners - Tanner Stupack (145) and Dawson Day (171).

Whitefish's Wolf Zinke took first place at heavyweight.

Ten teams competed in the annual event.

"We're pretty solid at the lower weight," Eureka coach Dan Lemer said.

"We definitely have some state-placer potential there."

White (10-0 on the season) and Durden (9-1) are freshmen.

Bakkila (8-2) is a sophomore.

White had to rally in his title match to stay undefeated. Shonn Roberts of Columbia Falls led 2-0 thanks to a first-period takedown.

White did all of his scoring in the third period - getting a takedown and then finishing it off with a 3-point nearfall.

"It was a highly anticipated match," Lemer said of the 105 final.

"We knew it would be a dogfight."

Durden and Bakkila both won their title matches by pins.

Eureka had three wrestlers place third - Kelby Lihme (130), Jose Letcher (140) and Curtis McDuffie (160). All three won by pin in the consolation final.

"He wrestled outstanding," Lemer said of Lihme.

"(Letcher) battled hard all weekend. (McDuffie) looked solid throughout the tournament. He wrestled with a lot of heart."

Polson, sixth with 93 points, had three runners-up: Taylor Martin (112), Steven Walk (130) and Bubba Burke (189).

Flathead had one wrestler in the final - Haze Bell (119). He finished second.

Polson and Columbia Falls are back in dual action Tuesday at Frenchtown.
