Boat backer ends up on shore

| July 19, 2011 12:00 AM

A man lost control of a boat near the Marina Cay Marina in Bigfork Harbor Monday afternoon, with the vessel ending up onshore and a woman passenger being injured in the crash.

Marvin Gielen, a lieutenant with the Bigfork Fire Department, said the man was attempting to back out of the marina but overcorrected and hit the forward throttle, causing the boat to careen into two adjacent boats and then pop out of the water to a grassy area with a seawall about two feet above the water.

Gielen said the driver was uninjured in the crash that was reported at about 1:15 p.m. But in radio transmissions, a 911 dispatcher said the 61-year-old woman was suffering from rib and abdominal pains. She was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The crash is being investigated by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Warden Chuck Bartos, who was still working to remove the boat about three hours later.
