Glacier National Park is recruiting volunteers for its second annual Noxious Weed Blitz on Thursday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants will meet at the West Glacier Community Building, where they will be trained to assist the park’s Invasive Plant Management Program in identifying, mapping and pulling invasive  plants. After a lunch that will be provided by the park, participants will learn how to conduct invasive plant surveys using GPS devices.

Later in the afternoon, the newly minted “weed warriors” will be dispatched on hikes to pull weeds. Participants are urged to bring gloves, footwear for hiking and drinking water.

Those who attend the training will be qualified to participate in weed -pulling hikes around the park.

Last year, weed warriors completed 72 surveys on 42 different trails, which contributed to the understanding of weed locations, spread and management.

The Weed Blitz is part of the Crown of the Continent Research Learning Center’s Citizen Science Program that engages the public to assist in gathering biological research data.
