Paul La Mott, who guided the Bigfork boys basketball program to a 37-14 overall record the last two seasons, will not return as head coach.

Bigfork activities director Matt Porrovecchio made the announcement earlier this week.

"All our coaching positions are one-year contracts," Porrovecchio said.

"At the conclusion of the season I decided to open up the head boys basketball position. I'm very appreciative of Paul's time, energy and commitment. I wish him the best."

Bigfork advanced to the Class B state boys basketball tournament in Great Falls earlier this month, posting a 1-2 mark. The Vikings won their opener, beating Huntley Project 60-52. Bigfork then lost to undefeated and top-ranked Wolf Point in overtime in the semifinals 81-78 and to Shelby 65-51 in a loser-out Saturday game.

It was Vikings first state tournament appearance since the 2002 season.

Bigfork did not lose a district regular-season game in two seasons under La Mott. The Vikings finished this campaign with a 19-9 mark. A year ago, they were ranked as high as fifth and finished with an 18-5 record.

"It was a disappointing decision," La Mott said.

"I don't think the situtation was handled to best of the administration's ability, but ultimately they have to do what they feel is best. I'm inclined to respect that."

La Mott, who is working on his master's degree, does not teach at the school.

"The opportunity to work with the kids, help the program get started in the right direction was fantastic," La Mott said.

"It is my great hope that it will continue in the same vein."

La Mott said he hopes to get another opportunity to coach basketball.

"My intentions are to continue," he said.

"When, where and how, I haven't figured that out. We'll see if there are any opportunites out there."

Lyle Whiteman coached Bigfork for one season prior to La Mott's arrival. Before that, Jim Epperly was the boys head coach for seven seasons.
