A 48-year-old Kalispell man has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol for an eighth time.

Gregory Anklam was arrested by a Montana Highway Patrol trooper at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday as he was clocked traveling 62 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone, according to court documents.

The Flathead County Attorney’s Office filed a felony charge of DUI and a misdemeanor count of driving without insurance Monday.

Anklam initially denied he had been drinking but admitted he had after the trooper when asked about the odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle, according to court documents.

He was arrested and booked into the Flathead County Detention Center when he refused to provide a breath sample. The trooper reported that Anklam admitted being at fault and told him that he was an alcoholic when asked to participate in field sobriety tests.

Anklam’s driving record shows seven convictions for DUI, with the first in April 1985. His last conviction was on May 25, 2006, according to court documents.

Because of his previous convictions, the latest DUI is punishable by up to 13 months with the Department of Corrections or a prison term of up to five years. A minimum fine of $1,000 is required and could be increased to as much as $10,000.

Anklam is still being held in the Flathead County Detention Center.
