'Pack brings back trophy

BUTTE - The Glacier boys needed a big second day in order to earn their first track trophy, and that's exactly what happened.

"We unloaded the cannons today," boys head coach Arron Deck said.

The Wolfpack had three state champions and nine placers at the Class AA state meet on Saturday en route to third place with 59.67 points.

Senior Jacob Leininger won the 110 hurdles and was second in the 300 hurdles, sophomore Kyle Griffith won the triple jump and freshman Todd Ogden was first in the javelin.

Glacier started the day near the bottom of the standings with eight points and ended with its best finish at state in the four-year history of the boys program.

"We knew what we had to do today and the kids responded," Deck said. "That's huge for our program. Hopefully this is a sign of where we're going."

Tanner Morrison took third in the discus; Troy Fraley was fifth in the 3,200; Richie Boyer earned sixth in the 800; Travis Komenda was fourth and Josiah Bumgarner tied for fourth in the pole vault.

Billings Senior, with only six athletes competing, mounted 91 points and became the third different Billings team to win in the last three years and sixth-straight overall. Billings West, which won from 2006-09 before losing the title to Skyview last year, finished second with 72.

Glacier's girls finished sixth with 36. Lexy Boschee finished her weekend with two fourth-place finishes, in the 100 hurdles and the triple jump. Anna Deleray took fourth in the 800 and Heather Fraley followed with fifth. Deleray also placed sixth in the 1,600. Leah Cook placed sixth in the triple jump.

Both Flathead squads took ninth. The Braves had 26 points and the Bravettes had 20.

For the Braves, Zach Perrin finished second in the 3,200, John Collins took fourth in the 300 hurdles and the long relay team placed fifth.

Bravette sophomore Kwyn Johnson earned second in the girls triple jump with an impressive mark of 37-4 3/4. West's Kennedy Smith won with a new Class AA record of 37-7 1/2, breaking the 1984 mark of 37-5 1/2 set by Butte's Holly Maloney.

Flathead's Tess Brenneman placed fifth in both the 100 and 300 hurdles and both Bravette relay teams took fifth.

The top two girls teams were in the same order as the boys, with the Billings Senior girls winning for the second year in a row, scoring 119.5 points. West was second with 84. Helena was third with 74.

Knoll, relay team

win titles

BUTTE - Bigfork senior Mallery Knoll won the 300 hurdles Class B state title on Saturday and the Vals came just short of earning a top-three trophy at the state meet.

Knoll also placed fifth in the 100 hurdles. The long relay team won and the short relay team came in second. The Vals tallied 36 points, falling two points shy of tying third-place Colstrip. Glasgow won its first state title since 2008 with 60 points and Cut Bank was a close second with 57.

On the boys side, Ryan Hayes earned second in the 200 and the short relay team took runner-up for the Vikings, which tallied 22.33 points.

Darby won its first boys state title, scoring 76 points. Manhattan was second with 53 and Deer Lodge took third, 35.

Cut Bank's Deni Fitzpatrick became the first girl in state history to win the 200 four years in a row, according to the Montana High School Association record books. She also became the third girl to win the 100 four years in a row.
