Lucy (Stearman) Tyler, 57

| October 5, 2011 12:00 AM

Lucy (Stearman) Tyler, 57, of Loveland, Colo., passed away on Sept. 27, 2011, at North Shore Health & Rehab Facility in Loveland, after a six-year battle with colon cancer.

She is survived by her son, Kurt Tyler, of Boulder, Colo.; parents, William C. Stearman Jr., and Dorothy (Lillard) Stearman of Dallas; and brother, Dr. William C. Stearman III, of Coppell, Texas.

Lucy was born on Oct. 10, 1953, in Dallas. Her family moved to Hico, Texas, in 1956, where she grew up on a 3,000-acre cattle ranch. She returned to Dallas to graduate from high school in 1972.

She attended Texas A & M University from 1972, until moving to Houston with her then husband, Keith Tyler, in 1975. In 1977, they moved to Casper, Wyo., where Lucy began working for Pacific Power & Light. Their only child, Kurt, was born in 1981.

Lucy and Kurt moved to Whitefish in 1990, where Lucy worked as one of only three (at that time) female district managers in Pacific Corp. Aside from her family's ranch outside of Hico, she considered Whitefish her home. She moved to Sunnyside, Wash., in 1994, but returned to Montana shortly thereafter to begin a second career as a high school math teacher. Lucy moved to Loveland in 2004 and immediately became an active member of her church community. She became especially close with Charlotte Pate, who remained a devout friend to the very end.

Lucy was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, friend, teacher and boss. She was always uplifting to those around her, despite years of fighting multiple sclerosis and cancer. Through her career and community involvement, she made deep and lasting friendships wherever she went. Her life will continue to inspire those who came to know her and she will be missed by many.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 801 Cleveland Ave., in Loveland.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Lucy's name to Heifer International, 1 World Ave., Little Rock, AR 72202, or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 733 Third Ave., New York, NY 10017.
