Sylvia Bloomer Carie, 104

| October 22, 2011 6:00 PM

Sylvia Bloomer Carie, 104, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell.

She was born on Aug. 16, 1907, in Menominee, Mich., to Douglas and Laura Bloomer.

She attended first through eighth grade at a small country school in Coffee Creek, Mont. Sylvia enjoyed learning and walked 10 miles each day to get to school.  Her desire to continue her education led her to Chinook, Mont., where she worked for a family for room and board so that she could attend high school.  After graduating from high school, she went on to earn a teaching degree and a cosmetology degree.

She married Leland Carie in 1933 and they began their married life in Coram. During the depression, the couple sold firewood and Christmas trees. As war loomed, the couple moved to Portland, where Sylvia was employed as a welder in the Portland shipyard. After returning to the Flathead Valley, they started ranching and raising beef cattle in Kila, and later Polson. After Sylvia’s husband passed away, Sylvia met and married Vern DeNault. They had 15 years of traveling and dancing before Vern passed away.

Sylvia enjoyed herding cattle on her trusted horse “Diamond.” She also loved afternoons with her grandkids, enjoying horseback riding and picnics, teaching the grandkids how to milk a cow, collect eggs, bake bread and change irrigation pipe. Sylvia was a homeopathic naturalist and had many natural remedies that she shared with her family.

Sylvia’s only child, son Donald Leland, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Donna Carie; and her grandchildren, Dana Kuzma, Douglas Carie, and Debbie and Jeff Williams. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren who she cherished dearly. They are Carlyn and Catherine Kuzma, Leland, Rainy, Nicholai, Creath and Remington Carie, and Eli and Ethan Williams. She is also survived by her nephew, Dave and Kathy Evenson.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery with reception following at Faith Free Lutheran Church.

Sylvia’s family would suggest donations to Immanuel Lutheran Home, or Hospice of Kalispell.
