The 2 1/2-year-old child who died after falling into a frozen pond Tuesday has been identified as Havehn Adams.

According to Lincoln County Sheriff Roby Bowe, Adams was playing with some dogs and walking around when he ended up wandering a long way from his home.

The toddler went out on thin ice and fell through into the pond in the Edna Creek area of north Lincoln County.

Bowe said Adams remained in the pond for “a significant amount of time” before his family pulled him out, unresponsive, shortly before 1 p.m.

Bowe said the child was not breathing when he was airlifted from the scene. Adams was pronounced dead at Kalispell Regional Medical Center at 8 p.m.

“It’s a tragic accident,” he said. “It’s going to be tough for the family and the first responders to deal with.”

Bowe urged people to use caution when near thin ice or high water, especially with spring runoff.

“You’ve got to be careful and pay attention to your surroundings,” he said.
