GREAT FALLS — In its first outing this year, the Glacier track team qualified six athletes for the state meet on Thursday.

Facing C.M. Russell in a dual, the Wolfpack boys swept through nearly every field event en route to a tie with the Rustlers. Both teams finished with 72.5 team points.

Glacier junior Kyle Griffith led the way, putting up qualifying marks in both the long jump and triple jump. Griffith soared by the mark in the long jump, clearing 21 feet, 5 1/4 inches in his longest attempt. He finished with a mark of 43-8 in the triple jump, nearly a foot and a half ahead of CMR’s Hunter Thomsen in second place and 17 inches past the qualifying mark.

Matt Iavicoli also qualified in the long jump, finishing second with a leap of 20-9 1/2.

Todd Ogden was in mid-season form in the javelin, with a long toss of 196-5. The throw was more than 24 feet farther than anyone else at the meet.

“That’s a good bomb to start the season,” Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said.

Travis Komenda qualified for state in the pole vault, winning with a height of 13-6. The boys also got wins in the shot put, discus, 400-meter run and 1,600 relay.

“There were some pretty good marks,” Deck said. “Our field events started out strong.”

The Wolfpack girls lost their dual against CMR, 82-53, running with a partial team filled mostly with first-year athletes. Despite the small numbers, the Pack made quite an impact.

Lexy Boschee qualified for state in three events, having a career day.

She leapt 34-10 in the triple jump, matched her personal best in the high jump, clearing 5-8, and ran her fastest time in the 100 hurdles, crossing the line in 15.49 seconds, nearly 3/4 of a second faster than her previous personal best.

“Today was one of those eye openers,” Wolfpack girls coach Jerry Boschee said.

The girls also got a qualifying mark from Leah Cook, who cleared 34-10 in the triple jump, more than four feet farther than the second place finisher. In addition to the two qualifiers, Glacier got wins from Kendall Halliburton in the 800 (2:42.59), Mercede Erickson in the 300 hurdles (52.68) and Brittan Austin in the javelin (90-4).

“We’re way ahead in our small group of returning athletes,” Boschee said.

The Wolfpack returns to the track on Tuesday, with the Class A Invitational at Legends Stadium.
