For the first meet of the season, Flathead track star Tess Brenneman certainly didn’t show any off season rust.

The senior sprinter won four individual events and was a part of the winning 400 relay on Tuesday at the Class A Invitational at Legends Stadium, starting the Bravettes’ season off with an exclamation point.

Brenneman set state qualifying times in all four of her individual runs, including a blazing fast 100 meter final that saw each of the top five runners finish sub-13 seconds and qualify for state. Brenneman set the pace at 12.80 seconds, edging teammate Dani Davis (12.82) by a hair, while leading the way for state qualifiers in Whitefish’s Amanda Foley (12.86), Glacier’s Lexy Boschee (12.87) and Polson’s Anna DiGiallonardo (12.90).

If that wasn’t enough Brenneman won the 200 by more than half a second (26.40), the 300 hurdles by nearly 50 meters (45.07) and the long jump by two and a half feet (18 feet, 5 inches). The Flathead short relay also won easily, finishing in 51.40 seconds.

“It was a pretty fantastic day,” Flathead girls coach Kirtlye Lohof said. “She doesn’t normally run five (events) but because we missed the meet on Friday we’re playing a little catch up ... It’s nice to see her back and healthy.”

Brenneman wasn’t the only Bravette to make a splash on opening day. Kelsey Davis threw the javelin almost 20 feet farther than her personal best on Tuesday, qualifying for the state tournament with a toss of 121-6.

“She hasn’t missed a day of practice and lifted all winter,” Lohof said of Davis.

Lexy Boschee set the tone for the Wolpack girls, qualifying in the 100 and winning the triple jump with a state qualifying mark of 36-3 1/4. Whitefish’s Amanda Foley, who was one of the pack of 100 qualifiers, ran a time of 26.97 in the 200 to qualify for state in her second event. Also making a mark at the event was Bigfork distance runner Makena Morley, who won the 1,600 by nearly half the track, finishing in 5:08.32.

The boys were highlighted by the strong field of Class A runners.

Whitefish’s Iaian Cameron ran a 23.49 in the 200 to qualify for state by one hundredth of a second, while teammate Logan Harwood had a bit more breathing room in qualifying for the 400, winning in 50.92. The Bulldogs’ Dakota Beatty finished second in the 110 hurdles but was plenty fast enough to qualify for state with a time of 16.06. Flathead’s Nick James won the event in 15.89.

Columbia Falls’ Derrick Williams easily won both the 800 (1:59.25) and 1,600 (4:27.33), calmly racing by the rest of the field to keep his fast spring rolling along. The Wildcats’ Daniel Jones threw 143-3 in the discus to win the event. Both athletes qualified in their respective events earlier this season.

Also qualifying in Class A were Polson’s Riley Sampson, with a toss of 49-5 in the shot put, and Libby’s Elias Lapka, clearing 21-2 1/2 in the long jump.

Glacier’s Todd Ogden improved his season best in the javelin, with a mammoth throw of 199 feet. Wolfpack teammate Taylor Hulsander also qualified for state, throwing 174-3 in finishing second. Flathead’s Matt Tokarz won the triple jump with a qualifying mark of 42-11.

“For each event this early in the season, there’s some marks that are ahead of the times,” Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said. “Hopefully that’s a sign for the season. There’s some good things to come. We like where we’re at right now.”
