Vikes, Dogs dash off with track titles

BIGFORK — Led by a pair of talented sprinters the Bigfork boys and the Whitefish girls dashed to victory at the Bigfork Invitational on Saturday.

Bigfork’s Ryan Hayes won both the 200- and 400-meter dashes and finished second in the 100 to help the Vikings to an easy team victory. Bigfork scored 92 team points, finishing nearly 20 ahead of second-place Whitefish.

Hayes also ran the anchor legs on both relay teams for the Vikings, the team finishing second in each.

The Vikings’ Mitchell Harsh was also a winner on Saturday, taking the discus with a throw of 128 feet, 6 inches.

“The boys, I’m just really impressed with how they’ve performed today,” Bigfork coach Sue Loeffler said.

“We’ve put them in a lot of events. They’ve just really come through, I’m really pleased with them.”

Eureka’s Hunter Price ran a blazing fast 15.28 seconds to win the 110 hurdles. Lions’ teammate Jared Welch won the high jump, clearing six feet.

The Whitefish girls got a big boost from senior sprinter Amanda Foley, who won both the 100 and the 300 hurdles. She easily ran under the state qualifying time in the 100, finishing in 12.90 seconds and won the hurdles by nearly two seconds in 47.91. Foley also finished second in the 200 and helped the Bulldogs to victory in the 400 relay.

Bigfork freshman Makena Morley made her mark on the meet, setting home track records in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. She broke the meet record by more than 20 seconds in the 1,600, finishing in 5:06.40, and set her personal best in the 3,200, finishing in 10:50.00, lapping the entire field in the process.

“I felt super good,” Morley said. “At first I thought my legs were going to be tired from the mile but they weren’t that tired.”
