Matt Owen, a two-time Montana Coaches Association Class AA Coach of the Year, has stepped down as head wrestling coach at Flathead High School.

Owen submitted his resignation to school officials earlier this month. He had no comment.

Owen guided the Braves to back-to-back state AA championships his first two season as head coach. Flathead finished fifth at state in 2011 and ninth in 2012.

During Owen’s stay, Flathead had six individual state champions.

Owen, a seventh grade math teacher at Kalispell Middle School, was an assistant coach for one year at Polson, Glacier and Flathead before taking over as head coach at FHS.

“I really appreciate his time and commitment while he was our wrestling coach and what he gave to the program,” Flathead Activities Director Bryce Wilson said.

“We wish him nothing but the best.”

Wilson said the position has been opened to internal and external applicants.

“We have a good pool of candidates who have applied,” he said.
