Bravettes lose opener, but win 2nd game

It was a slow start Saturday for the Flathead Bravette softball team.

Flathead had just two hits in the first game against Missoula Hellgate — which it lost 10-0. But the Bravettes bounced back with 10 hits and claimed the second game, 8-5.

“Again, it’s hard to win with no runs,” said Flathead coach Ashley Fusaro.

The Bravettes (2-4, 3-7) had just two hits — and seven of nine batters were either 0-for-2 or 0-for-1.

“We’ve got to be able to at least put the ball in play and make something happen,” the coach said.

Adrienne Carroll and Carson Dawson had one hit apiece for the Bravettes.

“But I was happy with how we bounced back after a tough conference loss,” she added.

The second game was a better offensive show.

Julia Morrow was 2-for-3 in that game with an RBI, Sidney Alberts was 2-for-3 and Mackenzie Twichel was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Flathead plays host on Tuesday to Northwestern A Whitefish.

LIBBY — The Loggers kept it close until late, but the Frenchtown Broncs scored six runs in the seventh inning to bust open for a victory over host Libby.

Frenchtown’s Keegan Wickman had a home run and a triple in the contest.

“Alyssa (Walker) pitched a pretty good game, but the errors hurt us,” said Libby coach Dean Thompson.

“Frenchtown is a good-hitting team. When you give them nine errors ... ” he said.

“But Abby Indreland is one of the best (pitchers) in the state, so getting eight hits off her was good,” he added.

Rebecca Kyriss was 2-for-4 with a home run for Libby (2-4).

The Loggers enter a busy part of their schedule.

They are at Sandpoint Tuesday, play Corvallis on Thursday, then head to the Frenchtown tournament.

EUREKA — Cassidy Morgan was 5-for-7 with two doubles and six RBIs as the Eureka Lions (3-3) downed Drummond in both games of a doubleheader.

The second game was tight —6-5 after four innings and 9-5 after six — but the Lions scored nine runs in the top of the seventh.

“I told them it was a little tighter than I wanted it to be,” said Eureka coach Andy Escobar.

Morgan now has 16 or 17 RBIs over the course of the season.

“Hannah Price had an excellent day. She came up big,” the coach added.

Price batted 1-for-3 in the first game and 3-for-6 in the second with a double, a triple and three RBIs.

“Solid pitching from both Eureka pitchers. All around good batting and good defense for Eureka,” the coach said.

The Lions, who were the visitor in the second game in order to cut travel costs, will meet Deer Lodge next Saturday in Polson for a doubleheader.
