The Flathead Invitational tennis tournament stretched for 12 hours on Saturday with all but one of the 144 matches completed.

Darkness prevented a third-place winner at No. 1 boys doubles.

“Lots of really good play from all schools,” Glacier coach Josh Munro said.

“The competition was being played at a very high level all the way around.”

Flathead coach Jeff Anderson agreed.

“Especially the No. 1 brackets in singles and doubles,” he said.

“They were stacked today. They were deep and some great tennis was played.”

Glacier had the top finish at both boys and girls No. 1 singles with Kellen Bates and Hailey Blalack.

“Kellen overcame a slow start today and finished strong,” Munro said.

Hailey and Veronica (Walton) played some tough singles. It’s always tough to play your teammate, but they handled it well.”

Blalack defeated Walton 6-4, 6-2 in his final.

Bates dropped Alex Braun of Hellgate 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Braun advanced from the semifinals with a tough 6-4, 7-6 win over Glacier’s Hunter Blalack.

“Hunter battled all day,” Munro said.

“He ended up third. He had a great match against Braun. You can’t get much better than that.”

Overall ...

“I’m happy with the way we played tie-breakers today,” Munro said.

‘We played a lot of them, a lot of close ones. We won a lot of them and the ones we lost were close. That’s where we want to be ... in every point in every match.”

For Flathead, Anderson was pleased with the showing of several individuals.

“Jeremy Zug, a senior, made his first tournament finals at third singles and just played a super day of tennis. I’m very happy with Jeremy.”

Zug lost to Sam Peel of Polson, 6-4, 7-5.

“Jon Pfeifer (No. 2 singles) played probably his best tennis of the year today,” Anderson said.

“He finished fourth, did some great things on the court.”

Anderson said Andrew Klingensmith, fourth at No. 3 singles, “played super today.”

On the girls side, Anderson said Willow Fantino “was able to put a number of good matches together.”

She finished third at No. 3 singles.

Polson’s Whitney Zimmerman finished first at No. 2 singles and Brady Hislop was second at No. 2 singles.

“Just fabulous experience for them,” Polson coach Bob Hislop said for Zimmerman and Brady Hislop.

“Very competitive matches at a higher level than we normally play. It was a good experience for them.”

Polson also had a champion at No. 3 boys singles and doubles and No. 3 girls doubles.
