Flathead boys, girls slosh to easy wins

Running in chilly temperatures and an intermittent rainstorm, Flathead slogged to victory on the track beating Missoula Hellgate and Missoula Sentinel in a triangular at Legends Stadium on Thursday.

Braves distance runner Zach Perrin ran his fastest time of the season in the 1,600, finishing the race in 4:23.26, despite having to avoid puddles on the inside corners of the track. The mark is the fastest in the state this year, besting his own time by more than a second.

The rest of the times and distances were dampened by the weather as conditions worsened throughout the meet.

Chris Cronk was the only double winner for the boys, winning the triple jump with a distance of 39 feet, 9 inches and tying for first in the high jump at 5-9. 

Connor Eaton won the 200 (24.55), Kevin Grosswiler won the 400 (53.43) and Nick James won the 110 hurdles (16.05). Ian Kirchoff won the shot put with a toss of 46-10 1/2.

The Braves 1,600 relay fell just short of qualifying for state, winning in 3:32.95, barely three seconds shy of the qualifying mark.

“It was tough,” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said. “All the competitors that participated had to be warriors. It was nasty. The kids hung in there and competed and that’s what we want.”

The Bravettes’ depth allowed them to run away with the girls side of the triangular. Flathead won 11 of the 16 events at the meet, including a clean sweep of four events.

Kwyn Johnson ran her best time of the season in the 100 hurdles, crossing the line in 16.02 seconds. 

Tess Brenneman won three events, including the 100 (13.26), the 300 hurdles (46.49) and the long jump (17-8 3/4). 

Kelsey Davis won two events, taking the top spots in both the javelin (110-1) and the shot put (34-5 1/2). 

Dani Davis led three other Flathead runners in the 200, crossing the line in 27.82 seconds, Annie King won an all Flathead 400 (1:04.98) and Briana Patyk led three other Bravette teammates in the high jump with a height of 4-11.

“Our girls stuck it out through the whole meet,” Flathead girls coach Kirtlye Lohof said. 

“Despite the conditions they put up some good marks.”

The weather, which resembled many of the divisional and state weekends over past seasons, was a nice lesson in dealing with adversity, she said.

“I’m almost glad it was nasty out,” Lohof said. “State and divisionals are almost always in bad weather. It’s a reminder of how to compete when it’s not good conditions.”
