FRENCHTOWN — Two home runs for Heidi Rausch, two doubles for Ashley Johnson, a triple for Jessica Bagnell — 15 hits in all — the Polson Pirates blasted Anaconda 16-2 in their opening game at the Frenchtown tournament on Friday.

But ...

Florence defeated the Pirates 6-2 in their second game of the day.

“I was very thrilled with the way they came out. I think Anaconda is leading the Southwest Conference, and we’ve been really dominating our opponents since the Columbia Falls game,” said Polson coach Larry Smith.

“But then to fall flat on our face ... I think (the Pirates) got a little too complacent. I thought (the Falcons) played an extremely sound game against us and the pitching (by Courtney Byrne) was great. She really kept our hitters off-balance,” Smith said.

Byrne gave up nine hits, but walked just two and didn’t hit anyone.

“She had very good control.

“They bunted the daylights out of us and we had a hard time defending it,” the coach added.

The Pirates (5-3) play Hamilton at 10 a.m. today, then have Belgrade at 2 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to that one,” Smith said of the Belgrade contest.
