FRENCHTOWN — The Libby Loggers enjoyed a terrific weekend at the Frenchtown softball tournament, going 4-0 with wins Saturday over Stevensville, 16-9, and Butte Central, 10-2.

“With the young kids we have, we hit the ball really well this weekend and defensively we played pretty good,” said Libby coach Dean Thompson.

Hitting ruled the day for the Loggers.

Against Stevensville, Mahalah Wedel tripled in the third inning to drive in a pair of runs for the Loggers.

Dalyn Germany hit a 3-run homer to left field in the sixth inning.

Against Butte Central, it was Rebecca Kyriss with a home run and Lexie Hageness batting 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Libby’s next action is Friday at Glacier and Saturday at Whitefish for a Northwestern A contest.

FRENCHTOWN — The Polson Pirates are still looking for that timely hit.

The Pirates, trailing by one run, had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh — but couldn’t get anyone home.

Belgrade defeated the Pirates 4-3. Polson finished with a split after beating Hamilton 10-7 earlier in the day at the Frenchtown tournament.

“I was pleased they got to that point, but we were just one hit short,” said Polson coach Larry Smith of the Belgrade contest.

“This was a well-played fastpitch game. Both pitchers did very well,” he said.

“It was the kind of game I like to be a part of. We had our chances. We just didn’t get that one key hit,” he added.

Six of the combined seven runs came on solo homers — Belgrade had two each by Taylor Hill and Justine Prickett.

Polson’s homers were by Riley Kenney and Heidi Rausch.

Belgrade had no errors, Polson’s only error was a throw on a force out at second. Belgrade didn’t score off of it, though.

Smith complimented the effort of Polson catcher Jaylin Kenney.

“I thought she had a terrific weekend. She been hitting the ball really well and doing extremely well behind the plate for us,” he said.

The Pirates (6-4, 2-2) play host to Glacier on Tuesday and Frenchtown on Thursday.

POLSON — Alexa Mrgich was 2-for-3 for Eureka, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Deer Lodge’s 20 hits as the Wardens downed the Lions in the first game of a Western B-C doubleheader.

Eureka led 5-0 after the first two innings, but Deer Lodge tied the game in the third inning, then broke it open with seven runs in the fourth.

Eureka jumped out 7-0 advantage in the second game en route to a 12-8 victory.

Jaime Soderling led the Lion offense, going 3-for-3 and driving in a run.

Ashlen Pacella was 2-for-4.

“We hit fairly well, our defense let us down,” Eureka coach Andy Escobar said.

“We threw the ball around a little too much. Our pitchers pitched fairly well.”

Eureka (4-4 overall) hosts Ronan on Tuesday.
