Track records tumble at A.R.M. Invitational

WHITEFISH — It was a record-setting day at Whitefish High School on Saturday as four athletes set seven new meet records at the A.R.M. Invitational.

Glacier’s Lexy Boschee broke three individual records at the meet, despite having all three events in the span of 20 minutes.

Boschee ran the second leg of the Wolfpack’s winning 4x400 relay before setting a new record in the 300 hurdles, crossing the line in 46.14 seconds. She then went straight to the high jump, clearing a record high 5 feet, 6 inches, then directly to the long jump where she set a new record of 18-1 1/2.

“I feel like I was standing around the whole meet and now I have four events in 20 minutes,” Boschee said three events in. “(Jumping) 5-6 off of my 300 hurdles race, that was good. I wasn’t expecting that on tired legs. It felt good.”

Wolfpack teammate Leah Cook set a new meet record in the triple jump, spanning 36-3/4. Tyryn Jacobs didn’t set a record, but won the 800 for Glacier, finishing in 2:31.74.

The big wins helped Glacier to a team victory at the meet, outpointing host Whitefish 90-75.

The Bulldogs were bolstered by their sprints, where Amanda Foley won both the 200 (26.74) and 400 (1:01.34) and finished second in the 100 in a virtual dead heat with Polson’s Anna DiGiallonardo, both finishing in 12.94 seconds. Marlow Schulz finished right behind Foley in both the 100 and 200 and the pair anchored the last two legs of Whitefish’s winning 400 relay team.

Bigfork’s Makena Morley turned in a time of 5:02.84 in the 1,600 to set a new meet record. She also finished second in the 400, trailing just Foley in the race.

Also turning in victories were Flathead’s Mattie Mazur in the 100 hurdles (16.24) and Columbia Falls’ Samantha Mundel in the 3,200 (12:13.24).

Columbia Falls’ Derrick Williams set new meet records in both the 1,600 and the 3,200. Williams edged Glacier’s Troy Fraley in the 1,600, winning in 4:20.44. Fraley also broke the old meet record, finishing in 4:22.64. Williams had a much bigger lead in the 3,200, where he blazed by the old record, finishing in 9:54.54.

Flathead’s Zach Perrin, who is normally seen running the distance events, bumped down to the 400 on Saturday, winning the race in 51.64. Used to the less speed-centric distance races, he was the only athlete not using starting blocks, but still managed to get a great start and finish first in his first attempt at the 400.

“It was tough for sure,” Perrin said. “I need to learn how to use the blocks. It was tough, especially into the wind coming into the finish line. I was dying.”

Flathead, who only brought a handful of varsity athletes after running two meets earlier this week, also got a win from John Collins in the 300 hurdles, who finished in 40.74. The Braves won both relays.

While the Braves were able to place high with their small group, it was Glacier who won the meet, finishing with 104 team points to Flathead’s 87.

The Wolfpack won with depth, getting some big wins from Greg Dalton in the 110 hurdles (15.74), Josiah Bumgarner in the pole vault (13-0), Matt Iavicoli in the triple jump (41-1 3/4) and Jake Tudahl in the discus (148-7).

Whitefish’s Gage Vasquez came from behind to win the 800 in 2:06.84. Vasquez passed Shelby’s Tanner Raph on the final turn and beat him down the stretch for the victory.

Polson’s Vince DiGiallonardo won the long jump with a leap of 19-7 and Pirate teammate Clark Rubel threw 48-4 1/2 in the shot put for the win.

Troy’s Ryan Rayson cleared 6-3 in the high jump, winning the event by four inches.
