Hockaday raffles Ace Powell painting

| August 15, 2012 5:30 PM

The Hockaday Museum of Art is holding a raffle for an original oil painting by renowned Montana artist Ace Powell.

The 8- by 10-inch work features a male American Indian’s face and has been valued at approximately $1,500.

Asa Lynn Powell was born in Tularosa, N.M., in 1912, and spent his boyhood near Glacier National Park.

Charles M. Russell was a significant influence on the young artist. At the age of 10, Powell copied one of Russell’s paintings down to the famous trademark “buffalo skull” signature. One of Russell’s proteges was impressed with the copy and suggested that the young artist have his own “brand,” prompting Powell to create his “Ace of Diamonds” trademark signature.

Powell became widely known for his depiction of western life in Montana through his painting and sculpture. He died in 1978.

Tickets for Powell’s painting are $20 each and will be sold at the museum, located at 302 Second Ave. E. in Kalispell, or by calling 755-5268. Only 100 tickets will be sold.

The winning ticket will be drawn at the Hockaday’s new event, “Rendezvous on Swan River,” Oct. 6. The winner will be notified by telephone.

Proceeds from the ticket sales will go to further the Hockaday’s mission “to enrich the cultural life of our community and region, and preserve the artistic legacy of Montana and Glacier National Park.”
