Black bears run amok in two cities

A group of black bear reports came in to the Kalispell and Whitefish police departments between Wednesday and Friday.

Whitefish police received a report of a black bear crossing U.S. 93 shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday. Another report came in around 8:30 p.m., when a black bear estimated to be 300 pounds was reportedly eating garbage in the backyard of a Mountain Park Drive home.

A black bear was also reported wandering around Mountain Park Loop Friday afternoon.

Kalispell police received a report around 11 p.m. Thursday that a black bear was wandering in the area of the fairgrounds before running north on the highway toward the hospital and north on Mission Street.

The Kalispell Police Department received a report that a truck was returned to its owner after the owner’s 13-year-old daughter and her 12-year-old friend took it from the Teal Drive home.

A man reportedly chased after a couple of youths in his car before jumping out and chasing them on foot.

An Appleway Drive resident reported her ex-boyfriend abused her repeatedly, but that she hadn’t reported it because he was always around.

A house and a vehicle were vandalized on Eighth Avenue West.

Someone burglarized a vehicle on North Meridian Road.

A driver’s license and Social Security card were stolen from a wallet on Sixth Street West.

A pair of laptops was stolen on East Idaho Street.

Money and a Nintendo Wii were stolen from a home on Seventh Avenue West.

Fishing rods, DVDs and a Microsoft XBox were stolen from a West Montana Street home.

The Whitefish Police Department received a report of a pair of men drinking and urinating on the front lawn of a hotel on U.S. 93 West and arguing with other guests.

A woman was arrested for driving under the influence on Spokane Avenue.

A man was arrested on a warrant on Iowa Avenue.

A person was arrested during a traffic stop on U.S. 93 West.

A motorist drove away from a West 13th Street gas station without paying for $52 in fuel.

Thefts were reported on Texas Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue.

A concerned woman contacted the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office to request deputies check on her sister and niece, who were reportedly 30 minutes from the Canadian border near a national park. The last contact she had received from them was five days earlier, when they told her they had no money, no gas and no food. Border Patrol agents and Glacier National Park staff were advised.

A man was rescued after getting stuck in the Swan River without a life jacket or other flotation devices. He was reported to have been hypothermic.

A security guard at a hotel in Bigfork had to use pepper spray on a man in his mid-50s after the man and his wife, both very drunk, tried to get in a car to drive away. The guard used pepper spray after the man jumped on the guard. The man did not seem to be affected by the pepper spray. The couple eventually left in a taxi.

An Ashley Lake Road resident reported a group of kids in a black car that came down a hill, pulled out a paintball gun and started shooting, hitting the resident’s boat.

A Marion resident complained that state workers with Child Protective Services came onto his property even though he has a “no trespassing” sign posted.

Several people were reported urinating out the window of a moving vehicle on Mather Drive in West Glacier, and the driver was reportedly passing other motorists recklessly.

A former tenant of a Martini Lane home in Columbia Falls was reported for breaking into the garage and stealing items, loading up a trailer.

A group of three people, each on an all-terrain vehicle, was reported driving 50 mph up Blacktail Road in Lakeside.

A drunk woman was reported for leaving a business on Ninth Street West in Columbia Falls in a car.

A woman was cited and released after being apprehended trying to shoplift from a pawn shop on U.S. 2 East in Kalispell.

Someone cut the lock on a storage unit on Montana 35 and stole several items from inside.

Someone stole about 15 gallons of gas from a vehicle by cutting the fuel line.

A video game system was stolen from a house on Flathead Drive.

A burglary was reported on Pheasant Drive.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office investigated an assault with a weapon on Light Road in Polson.

The Polson Police Department received a report of a burglarized vehicle on 12th Avenue East.
