Peck, VanDerveer push Bigfork girls past St. Ignatius

HAMILTON — Bigfork held St. Ignatius to single-digit scoring in all four quarters en route to a 44-24 victory in opening-round action Thursday at the Western B girls divisional basketball tournament.

Taylor Peck and Melissa VanDerveer, 12 points apiece, guided the No. 3-ranked Valkyries (18-4) to an easy victory.

VanDerveer also led the team in rebounds with seven.

The Vals made 11 of their first 22 shots from the field and led 24-12 at half.

Bigfork plays Plains today in semifinal action at 5:45 p.m.

Ryne Baerlocher hit a shot at the buzzer from the free-throw line to win it for the Falcons. He finished with 13 points.

Fourth-ranked Bigfork had beaten No. 9 Florence twice during the regular season — by three and one point.

Florence had a big edge at the free-throw line, going 12-23. Bigfork was 2-2.

Ian Lorang hit 17 points for Bigfork (17-5). Aaron Ward had 14 for Florence (19-3).
