Wolfpack falls to undefeated Bozeman

BOZEMAN — The Glacier girls knew it wouldn’t be easy opening with No. 1 ranked Bozeman at the Class AA state basketball tournament.

And it wasn’t.

The Hawks rallied past the Wolfpack 48-35 in the first round, but not before taking a few lumps.

Glacier held Bozeman to the lowest scoring output in two months and frustrated a team that has cruised through the season winning all 21 of its games.

“There was never a question of whether we competed or whether the girls played hard, we just didn’t execute the way we needed to offensively,” Glacier coach Kris Salonen said.

The Wolfpack hung with Bozeman for most of the game, using the state’s second best defense to pester the Hawks.

Glacier traded baskets with Bozeman to open the game, with junior guard Nicole Heavirland hitting a 3-pointer to even the score at 3-3. She stole the ball and dished underneath to a wide open Cassidy Hashley just a few minutes later, tying the game again at 5-5.

Bozeman closed the quarter with a 12-8 advantage, but even as the Hawks pushed the lead to 28-16 at halftime, the Wolfpack wasn’t done fighting.

Glacier came out of the break firing. Hashley and Heavirland teamed up to score the first seven points of the third quarter, including two tough layups from Heavirland, getting fouled in the act each time. She hit just one of the extra free throws but it was good enough to slice the lead to 28-23 with 6:36 left in the third.

Then Bozeman switched its tactics. Instead of the full-court press it had been running the entire first half, the Hawks fell back in to the half court, switching their athletic forwards on Glacier’s guards outside. The Pack was held scoreless for the next six minutes, not scoring again until Amy Lybeck was able to spin free for a jumper with five seconds left.

The Hawks led 37-25 entering the fourth and outside of a few short runs, Glacier couldn’t hit enough shots to narrow the gap.

“They’re a great team. They’re undefeated and No. 1 for a reason,” Salonen said.

Heavirland had a game-high 16 points and Hashley posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Amy Davis led Bozeman with 14 points.

Glacier’s defense held the Hawks to just 33 percent shooting from the floor, well below their season average.

“We take so much pride in that,” Salonen said. “The thorn in our side has always been the offense. We’ve got to get things going tomorrow.”

The Wolfpack play Billings Senior in a loser-out game at 10:30 a.m.
