Wrestling a family affair

by Dixie Knutson Daily Inter Lake
| March 24, 2012 11:42 PM

Wrestling runs in the family — or families, in this case.

The Vasquez family of Kalispell Wrestling Club pulled down three state Little Guy wrestling championships this past weekend and the Windauer family of Columbia Falls won two titles.

In Friday’s Beginner’s Tournament at the Flathead County Fairgrounds, it was Teegan Vasquez winning the 50A weight class and Justin Windauer claiming the title in 55A.

On Saturday, at the Little Guy State Tournament, Tilynne Vasquez claimed the Novice 60 weight class, Ben Windauer was first in the Middle 90 and Trae Vasquez capped the day with the Junior 85 title.

Team-wise, Polson won both the novice and middle tournaments, scoring 28 and 25 points, respectively. Kalispell Wrestling Club claimed the junior tournament, outscoring second place Mission-Charlo 55-43.

Corvallis was second in the novice tournament with 24 points and Mission-Charlo was second in the middle tournament with 27 points.

But five state championship among two families is a pretty good effort.

You might say they’re following in their dad’s footsteps.

Dave Windauer and Rich Vasquez were both state champions for Columbia Falls High School. Both were members of the Columbia Falls team that won the 1990 Class A state title.

And both are following their kids around these days.

“My dad wrestled. The first time I tried it, I thought it was pretty fun, so I kept on,” Ben Windauer said.

“I think I do a good job listening to my coaches. I like it because it’s an individual sport and it’s fun to get out there and wrestle your hardest ... and win,” he said.

“But it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s a fun sport,” Ben hastened to add.

“I’m proud of them for their effort, for doing their best,” Dave Windauer said.

“I think wrestling is an excellent sport for life lessons. It teaches work ethic. If you work hard, it pays off. You don’t win them all the time. That’s part of life too, learning how to lose. They both were defeated this year and they handled that well, too.

His own state championship “doesn’t mean that much. I try to focus on (the boys) and make sure they’re having fun and enjoying it.

“They both like it and want to continue, so I’ll follow them as long as they want to do it,” he added.

And if they don’t want to wrestle?

“I’ll support that too,” Windauer smiled.

Rich Vasquez also sees wrestling as a way to teach “honor, discipline and courage. That will help you later on in life,” he said.

It’s all about the doing the work.

There is a rule in the Vasquez house — you don’t have to compete, but you do have to train, said dad Rich.

“You have to get off your butt one hour four times a week. I don’t believe in a sedentary lifestyle at all. As far as competition goes, it’s their choice. But they have to go train.

“But we play games and make it fun. I’ve never heard a kid say they don’t like to play,” he added.

“It’s definitely a great family thing. I figured the boys always would wrestle but one thing that is really nice is having Ti(lynne) going also. They’re all together and they all continue to grow as people,” he added.

Trae Vasquez has already set his goals — he wants to wrestle at Stanford University then take a shot at the U.S. Olympic team.

“All three of them have those college plans. They want to use wrestling as an avenue to get to college,” Rich said.

“But right now, we’re setting a lot of small goals,” he added.

“I love (wrestling). All my friends do it. I just like having everyone around me,” Trae said.

“I’ve been (wrestling) since I was four. I started out a little guy ... I just kind of rolled around and stuff, but as I started progressing and getting older, my dad started pushing me to get better and get my technique down.

“When I was 6 or 7, I decided I wanted to compete at a higher level. I started training and training, just working my butt off,” he said.

“It’s just fun. We travel, hang out with friends at hotels, swimming. I get to compete with the best in the nation and it’s just a fun time,” he said.

But for his little sister and brother, it about the fun, Rich said.

“We hang out as a family, hit an amusement park. I think they talk a lot more stories about the amusement parks then they do about the actual wrestling. They can name off all those amusement parks. I don’t think they can name all the places we’ve wrestled,” he laughed.

“We have a lot of fun. I’m proud of them. They work hard, train hard. We hope people will see that who will want to travel with us. We definitely want them to be part of it. The more we get, the better.”

The next immediate step is Trae will travel April 12-16 to Iowa to compete in the National Middle School Duals as a member of Team Montana.

This is the second time he’s made Team Montana — the placers at the folkstyle tournament in Great Falls wrestle off for the spots.

“I’m excited to go there again. I hope to keep up the good work and get more wins,” he said.

As for the Windauers, they are taking it “one step at a time,” Dave said.

“If they feel like going on, we’ll do some more probably,” he said.
