COLUMBIA FALLS — The sun came out and the times went down for the opening track meet of the season at the Columbia Falls Invitational.

The Columbia Falls boys showed up in form for their host invite Saturday, winning the meet with ease over Thompson Falls and Bigfork. The Wildcats finished with 96 team points, ahead of Thompson Falls’ 86. Bigfork was third with 63.

They were aided by huge performances from seniors Daniel Jones and Derrick Williams. Both have already qualified for state, easily hitting the new qualifying standards for Class A that went into effect this season.

Jones qualified in both the shot put and discus, with a toss of 50 feet, 1 1/2 inches in the shot, beating the qualifying mark by more than two feet and winning the event by more than four. In the discus he had a toss of 149-3, clearing the qualifying mark by more than seven feet and winning the meet by almost 22.

Williams was just as impressive, winning the 3,200-meter run by more than a minute, finishing the race in 9:53.22. The qualifying time for state was 10:15.

“Going in, we were aiming for him to run 10:05,” Columbia Falls coach Jamie Heinz said. “He blew that away. That’s awesome he’s in that good of condition to start the season.”

Bigfork’s Ryan Hayes blew away the field in the 200 finishing in 23.25 and Eureka’s Hunter Price ran a great time in the 110 hurdles, crossing the line in 16.19.

The competition of the day came at the high jump, where Troy’s Ryan Rayson and Thompson Falls’ Dominique Holt battled back and forth as the bar kept rising. After Troy’s Cody Orr bowed out at 6 foot, the two both cleared 6-4, then each took a few tries before clearing 6-5. As the bar rose above both their heads, they each narrowly missed at 6-6, with Rayson claiming the tiebreaker victory with fewer misses.

Polson edged Cut Bank for the girls team title. Junior Anna DiGiallonardo won both the 100 (13.06) and 200 (27.35) and finished second in the 400 to help the Pirates race by Cut Bank 84-81.33.

Bigfork freshman phenom Makena Morley won both the 3,200 and the 800, finishing way in front in each. She won the 3,200 in 10:55.41, nearly two minutes in front of second place. She won the 800 by the entire front stretch, finishing 13 seconds in the lead with a time of 2:23.82.
