On a cold, blustery day at Legends Stadium, the Flathead teams swept the Archie Roe Invitational, dazzling in a meet that was extremely competitive in every event.

Matt Tokarz led the way for the Braves, winning both the long jump (21 feet, 4 1/4 inches) and triple jump (43-2 1/2). He also anchored Flathead’s winning 400 meter relay team, while finishing third in the 100 and fifth in the high jump.

Nick James (15.77 in the 110 hurdles) and Zach Perrin (9:33.13 in the 3,200) were also winners for the Braves, who won the team total with 164.67 points, easily outdistancing Glacier in second with 94.

It was Perrin that pushed the tempo at one of the most exciting races of the day. Three runners finished the 1,600 in 4:23 or faster, with both Perrin and event winner Derrick Williams of Columbia Falls setting personal bests.

Along with Glacier’s Troy Fraley, the three runners paced the first lap before Perrin broke free from the pack rounding into the second lap. Williams and Fraley kept chase nearby while the trio left the rest of the field behind. Rounding into the third lap, it was Fraley who took the lead, holding on to the top spot until the backstretch of the final lap. Williams was able to pass Perrin in the final 200 meters and held him off through the finish line, finishing in 4:18.63. Perrin finished in 4:20.29 and Fraley in 4:23.42.

“It’s always fun to run with them, they’re super talented,” Williams said. “I’m not going to lie to you. That whole last 200 I’m thinking Zach’s coming. He’s got to be coming.”

Columbia Falls swept the sprints, with Josiah Osborne taking the 100 (11.54) and Anthony Correa winning both the 200 (23.48) and 400 (50.99). Correa also anchored the winning 1,600 relay team, catching and passing Flathead’s John Collins in the last 100 meters, to net the Wildcats a time of 3:27.24.

Flathead’s relay team, running with its top four runners for the first time this season, qualified for state with a time of 3:28.16.

Columbia Falls’ Daniel Jones won the discus with a toss of 143-5, Polson’s Riley Sampson win the shot put with a throw of 51-0 and Glacier’s Josiah Bumgarner won the pole vault, clearing 13-6.

On the girls side, Flathead sped to victory on the speedy legs of senior Tess Brenneman. Brenneman won the 100 (12.78), 400 (58.72) and the long jump (17-11 1/2) and ran legs on the Bravettes’ winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams.

Bailey Hughes won the 3,200 in 12:01.16 in Flathead’s other individual win.

Glacier’s Lexy Boschee set the only record at Saturday’s meet, tying the 20-year old high jump standard by clearing the bar at 5-9. Boschee also won the 100 hurdles (15.17) and the triple jump (36-11), where the top three finishers were Wolfpack jumpers.

Whitefish’s Marlow Schulz won both the 200, finishing in 26.36, and the 800, in 2:18.09, to help the Bulldogs to a third place finish.

Cut Bank’s Jordyn Vaile was a double-winner, winning both the shot put and the discus.

Flathead also won the boys and girls JV and freshman meets on Saturday.
