Glacier, Flathead netters in semifinals at AA divisional
GREAT FALLS — The first day of Northern AA divisional tennis play went pretty much as expected on Thursday at three different locations in the Electric City.
Glacier has three of the four semifinalists in singles play for girls — Katya Kulikova, Hailey Blalack and Veronica Walton — while for the boys, defending divisional and state champ Kellen Bates of Glacier is a semifinalist along with Flathead’s Glenn Strickler.
In doubles for Glacier, Karl Hellwig and Danny Roe along with Evan Froystad and Izaak Castren all went 2-0 Thursday to move on to today’s semifinals. On the girls side, Kirstyn Haugenoe and Kali Mathison and Amy Snipstead and Kailea Vaudt are also semifinalists.
“We had a really, really good day overall for our school,” said Glacier coach Josh Munro.
“All the boys from the Flathead Valley had a good day.
“Both teams (boys and girls) are playing very solid. We just have to close the deal.”
The Glacier girls are seeking their third-straight divisional title.
Bates is after his third singles crown in a row, while the Glacier boys hope to make it two straight team championships.
“It was ridiculously windy today,” Munro said.
“The kids did a great job handling the wind and fighting through some tough spots.”
Flathead coach Jeff Anderson was satisfied with the performance of his netters.
“Some bright spots, we had seven out of our eight singles players all get wins,” he said.
“We still have Jeremy Zug and Tucker Moe in the consolations, as well as Barrie Sugarman.”
Flathead has one doubles team left battling for a state berth — Triston Gills and Tyler Beagley.
“Jeremy Zug is playing the best tennis I’ve seen him play in his four years at Flathead,” Anderson said.
“He’s peaking at the right time of his career. That’s exciting to see.”
Play winds up today with the fop four individuals and doubles teams moving on to state May 18-19 in Missoula.
