Quintin H. 'Rick' Richter, 86

Quintin H. “Rick” Richter, 86, of West Glacier, passed away at home of natural causes May 8, 2012.

Rick was born Sept. 23, 1925, in Medicine Lake, to Henry J. and Rose (Houlzmer) Richter.

 Growing up, Rick spent five years in the orphanage in Helena with his brothers and sister while his mother was hospitalized in Galen with tuberculosis. Then he lived with his Grandmother Houlzmer in Sandpoint, Idaho, before returning to Montana to live in Galen and Warm Springs when his family reunited. He learned his carpentry skill during this time.

Rick served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946. While in the Navy he served on the destroyer USS Endicott. After discharge from the Navy, Rick worked on construction jobs throughout Montana, including building bridges along the I-15 corridor, moving his family as the bridges progressed.

 On Oct. 18, 1952, he married Catherine Marie Vanisko in Deer Lodge. They shared 60 wonderful years together.

Finally in 1960, he settled in West Glacier while building the bridge in Apgar. He and his wife, Catherine, built SanSuzEd RV Park that he affectionately named after his loving children. He worked for Knutson Construction with his friend, Harold Oney, building houses in Columbia Falls for many years.

 Rick is survived by his wife Catherine; his three children, son, Ed, and Jo Anne, of Rosharon, Texas; and daughters, Susen Richter Larson of Fessenden, N.D., and Sandy Richter Hylton of Hungry Horse; his six grandchildren, Bonnie Larson, Lars Larson, Curtis and wife Lucy Gomes, Sara Gomes, Laura Gomes and Jennifer Lewis, as well as six great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

 Rick was preceded is death by his parents; brothers, Ambrose and Vincent; and sister, Marcie.

 Rick’s grin, twinkling eyes and wit were only surpassed by his adoring look at his Catherine. Rick will be remembered for taking in many kids during summers, including his nephews and nieces, Dick, Ron, Rusty, Randy, Henry, Mike, Rose, Christie and Carol, teaching them many life skills. Rick was a true Montanan, enjoying many years of fishing and hunting. Rick was always available with his hammer to help his neighbors and community.

Rick appreciated all his friends, neighbors, family and medical staff that helped and encouraged him during the latter part of his life.

 Cremation has taken place. Rick requested that no services be held. Donations can be made in his honor to your favorite charity.
