The Kalispell Lakers rode the strong pitching of Matt McLean and a balanced offensive attack to a 11-1 victory over the Calgary Redbirds in the first game of a home American Legion baseball doubleheader on Saturday.

Charlie Obermiller, Cody Dopps, Dillon Eaves, Sean O’Connell and Adam Frandsen all had two hits for Kalispell, which totaled 11 for the game.

The second game ... it was all Calgary as the Redbirds scored 11 runs in the third inning en route to a 17-1 victory. Calgary had 11 hits in that contest against four Lakers pitchers.

The Lakers mound staff issued 11 walks, four in the Redbirds big inning.

“We had a tough time adjusting to the zone,” Lakers coach Ryan Malmin said.

“We were kind of sitting on our heels and we made a couple of defensive mistakes.”

In the opener, the Lakers took a 3-1 lead with a 3-run third inning. O’Connell tripled in two runs in the fourth and the Lakers finished it off with a 6-run fifth inning.

In the fifth, Obermiller, Dopps, Eaves and O’Connell had consecutive singles.

“Eaves, back from an injury, played well,” Malmin said.

“We started him at DH (designated hitter).

“Matt threw well in the first game,” Malmin said.

“He was right around the zone.”

McLean (3-0) went five innings, limiting Calgary to a pair of singles. He fanned four and issued four walks.

“Take away that third inning (second game), the rest of the day we played pretty good baseball,” Malmin said.

Kalispell (5-4) hosts Belgrade today for a nonconference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

The Lakers homestand continues next weekend with the annual Canadian Days Tournament. The three-day event begins Friday evening.

LIBBY — The Kootenai Valley Rangers had a tough time in the first day of the Loggertown Wood Bat Classic on Saturday, losing to the Missoula Pioneers and Calgary.

The Rangers had a rough day on defense, committing four errors in the opening loss to Missoula.

The Pioneers scored seven runs in the third inning, running away with a victory in five innings.

“We had some hard errors at the wrong time,” Kootenai Valley coach Brent Holder said.

“They put together some good runs and we struggled with the defensive side of the game. I thought we had some good at-bats, but we couldn’t string anything together.”

The Rangers led most of the second game on a strong outing by Ryan Holder on the mound. Kootenai Valley scored twice in the bottom of the first and once in the fourth, but gave up four runs in the last three innings of regulation. The Rangers came back to tie it up but fell apart in the top of the eight, giving up seven runs to Calgary.

“Calgary’s a very good team, probably one of better teams we’ve played this year,” Holder said.

“We had a few too many mental errors in the top of the eighth.”

Kootenai Valley will play Mission Valley and Libby tomorrow in the tournament.
