BIGFORK — Running neck and neck all day, the Plains girls edged by Bigfork in the last three events on Saturday to claim the District 7B track championship.

Bigfork was tied with Plains following 14 events but was outlegged in the last three events, as the Trotters were able to win the discus and 1,600 relay and take two of the top three spots in the 3,200.

It wasn’t for lack of effort from the Valkyries, who were led by freshman sensation Makena Morley, a winner of four individual events. Morley dominated the distance events, winning the 1,600 in 5:06.00 and the 3,200 in 11:12.00, both by wide margins. She was nearly as dominant in the 800, winning by the entire frontstretch in finishing in 2:22.00. She won the 400 in 1:02.80.

“I wanted to do better,” Morley said after her third race (the 800) of the day. As for getting ready for the next few weeks her strategy is to keep, “having fun and running fast.”

The Vals also got a win from Melissa Vanderveer in the triple jump (31 feet, 6 1/2 inches), but were unable to beat the depth of Plains, which won eight events, including the top three spots in both the 100 and 200 and finished two in the top three of five other events.

The team scores weren’t as tight for the boys, where Thompson Falls held a sizeable lead most of the day.

The Blue Hawks got a huge day from Dominique Holt, winning the 110 hurdles, pole vault and long jump. They also got wins in four other events to amass 191 team points ahead of Bigfork’s 174.5.

Bigfork’s Ryan Hayes had a solid day, coming from behind to win the 200 in 22.86 and cruising to a 400 win in 51.63. He also anchored each of the winning relay teams for Bigfork while finishing second in the 100 by just a 10th of a second.

The Vikings did well in in the field, winning the triple jump (Cameron Nissen, 40-8), shot put (Austin Cantrell, 46-7) and the discus (Mitchell Harsh, 138-10).

Troy’s Ryan Rayson cleared 6-4 in the high jump to win the district title, beating two teammates who cleared 6-0.

The top six finishers in each event advance to next weekend’s Western B divisional meet in Corvallis.
