Gervin Calvert 'Bud' Stein, 90

| May 18, 2012 5:41 PM

"Bud" Stein, having lived a rich and diverse life, passed away peacefully and quickly on May 12, 2012, at age 90, in Bigfork.

Bud was an accomplished athlete, named to the Athletes Hall of Fame at Mamaroneck High School in New York, where he was a star competitor in several sports. He continued his prowess in ice hockey by coaching the Mamaroneck team to the National Finals at Lake Placid in 1952.

His passion, however, was golf. Bud was a member of Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, the Victoria Club Riverside, Calif., and Eagle Bend Golf Club in Bigfork. He enjoyed many years of playing with the Victoria Vikings men's group, and in Bigfork with the Merrymen. Bud was particularly proud that, as he aged, he was able to shoot his age, as recently as his 82nd year.

Bud was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, adept at hunting and fishing. In later years he captained a boat, and loved taking friends on the Swan River to admire the spectacular scenery.

Bud attended Colgate University in New York, leaving to enlist in the Army in World War II. His career was spent in the oil industry, as president of Lincoln Oil in New York, then in sales and marketing for ConocoPhillips in Los Angeles.

Bud leaves the cherished love of his life, Dorothy, their relationship spanning seven decades. He treasured and was devoted to his family, daughters, Susan and David of Denver, and Nancy and Zoneth of Bigfork and Lone Pine. Calif. He had five grandchildren, Ryan, Brooke, Kristin, Brody and Hayden; and three great-grandchildren, Kayla, Emma and Indiana.

No services are planned at this time.

Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home is caring for Bud’s family. You are invited to go to www.jgfuneralhome.com to offer condolences and view Bud’s tribute wall.
