Hellgate ends Glacier's softball season

MISSOULA — Missed opportunities.

When the Glacier Wolfpack softball players look back on their Class AA state play-in series with Missoula Hellgate, they’re going to think about all the base runners they stranded.

Missoula Hellgate claimed the final berth in next weekend’s Class AA state tournament by defeating Glacier 3-1 and 6-2 on Friday.

“It was one of those days where we didn’t play as well as we could have and Hellgate was well-coached and they did some good things,” said Glacier coach Joel Bemis.

Glacier had just three hits in that game — by Jena Willis, Tacey Howe and Cassidy Mann.

“Every time we had opportunities, we couldn’t bring them in,” he said.

He estimated the Wolfpack left runners on in four or five innings of the first game.

“But we were still competitive. We worked hard and we did some good things,” he said.

In the second game “we hit the ball better, but we did the same thing,” he said.

Glacier had 13 hits in that game — Hannah Atlee was 3-for-4, Shayna Atlee, Willis and Taylor Riggles were each 2-for-3.

Glacier scored one run in the second and another in the fourth.

“We strung three or four hits together to get the two runs,” Bemis said.

Hellgate led that game 2-1 much of the way, then scored a couple late runs.

“They just chipped away, scored runs here and there,” the coach said. “They went small ball on us and we threw the ball around a little bit.”

“Give credit to (Hellgate pitcher Makaya Resner). She was pretty good,” he added.

Glacier graduates three seniors from the 2012 squad — Cassidy Mann, Shayna Atlee, Kallie Evans.

“We’ve got a good core group back. I think the future looks pretty bright, but we did some good things this year too. We had some memorable wins and did some good things.”
