Javelin title, record for Jones

COLUMBIA FALLS — Dan Jones has focused most of his high school track career on the shot, discus and sprints.

Those kept him so busy he didn’t have time for javelin — until about three or four weeks ago.

Jones has had some injury issues this year that pretty much took running out of the mix, according to Columbia Falls track coach Jamie Heinz.

So, javelin was added to his repertoire.

His throw last week was 190 feet, 5 inches, a school record.

With that type of an effort, it wasn’t a surprise on Friday when he won the javelin — but Jones bested that with a Northwestern A divisional meet record throw of 202-6 — and as of Friday, was leading the entire state for 2012.

The old divisional record was 202-4 set by Libby’s Kyle Baker in 2005.

“I went out and had fun. That’s one of my main problems is that I go out and get too hard on myself if I don’t throw what I want to throw. My coaches have been telling me to go out and have fun and whatever happens, happens,” Jones said.

“Now I’m going to go home and ice my arm,” he smiled.

“He has just a great pull, a great block at the end. If he can stay relaxed, he does a nice job. He throws with every inch of his body,” said Columbia Falls throws coach Mark Beckwith.

Things went right from the beginning on Friday.

His first couple were in the mid-195 range. The record breaker was on the first throw of finals.

“He had an outstanding series leading up to that throw. He broke his own school record three times today,” Heinz said.

“That’s pretty impressive. I’m proud of him. He’s excited. He wants to go to college and compete in track and field and that 202 is definitely going to open some doors for him,” Heinz said.

“Dan’s the type of kid who could go to college and be a decathlete for somebody.”

The Columbia Falls boys lead the meet with 83 points after the first day, while Whitefish leads with 85 points on the girls side. Second place for the boys is Whitefish with 57. Second place for the girls is Columbia Falls with 53 points.

“We had some outstanding performances. We had some personal records. The kids are excited to be competing on our home track and they stepped up and responded very well,” Heinz said.

“I’m happy with how we competed.”

Heinz also complimented the efforts of Jinise Osborne in the 1,600 — personal record of 5:30 for second place, Carley Jo Benda for her 34-2 in the triple jump and Courtney Neise for her winning performance in the 100 hurdles.

“That was a very nice surprise,” Heinz said of Neise.

Marlow Schulz led the Whitefish girls with wins in the 400 (57.35) and triple jump (34-6).

Note: Boys 110 hurdles were hand timed and were not converted.
