MISSOULA — The Flathead girls scored 70 points on the final day to join the Flathead boys as Western AA divisional track champions on Saturday.

The FHS girls were in third place with 40 points after finals in eight events on Friday. The Bravettes trailed Helena High by 24 points at that point.

“We were expecting good things and they did good things,” Flathead coach Kirtlye Lohof said.

“We knew today would be a big day. We had so many in the finals.”

Helena wound up second with a 107 total, four points behind Flathead. Big Sky was third, 97, and Glacier fourth, 61.

Flathead went 1-2-5-6 in the 200 to score 21 points in that event alone.

The Bravettes scored in every event but the high jump and discus.

The outcome, however, came down to the final event — the 1,600 relay. Missoula Big Sky finished first, Helena was second and Flathead third. Big Sky’s beating Helena was the difference.

Flathead finished second last year at divisional. This was the first divisional title for the girls since 2007.

The Bravettes will have 10 individuals competing at state in Butte on Friday along with two relay teams.

Dani Davis won the 100 (12.79), Tess Brenneman the 200 (26.02) and Kwyn Johnson the triple jump (36-6 1/2) for the Bravettes on Saturday.

Glacier’s Lexy Boschee took first in the high jump (5-8).

The Flathead boys were the lone team to break the century mark with a 111 team total. Big Sky, 96, was second and Helena Capital, 76.5, edged Glacier for third place by a half point.

Flathead’s Zach Perrin won the 1,600 (4:18.22) and Mathew Tokarz set a new divisional record with his winning triple jump (46-7 1/2). That’s also a new school record for Tokarz, besting the old mark of 45-11 by Steve Hodge set in 2001.

Flathead also won the 1,600 relay (3:24.04), posting possibly the fastest time in the state this spring. Kevin Grosswiler, John Collins, Perrin and Michael Managhan were on the relay.

“We scored in every event but the 200,” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said. “Big pluses were Mathew Tokarz and Zach Perrin. Between the two of them, they scored 45 points (at the two-day meet).”

Flathead will have 17 athletes at state competing in 16 events.

“We had a good meet,” Hodge said.

“We had some balance. When you score in almost all events, you will score a lot of points.

“Winning is always nice,” he added.

“We’ve had a lot of divisional wins (over the years). It’s fun. They worked hard (this weekend), now it’s on to Butte next weekend (for state).”

The top placers for the Glacier boys on the final day of divisionals were Troy Fraley, second in the 1,600, and Kyle Griffith, second in the triple jump.
