The Edmonton Cardinals scored five runs in the final four innings to claim an 8-5 victory over the Kalispell Lakers in the final game of the Canadian Days AA Tournament at Griffin Field on Sunday afternoon.

The loss was the first for the Lakers after three American Legion baseball tournament wins.

“We jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Edmonton did what good teams do ... chip away at the lead,” Lakers coach Ryan Malmin said.

“We had some opportunities later in the game to score, but we were a little too passive deeper in the count.”

Cody Dopps doubled and homered (sixth inning) in three plate appearances for the Lakers and drove in three runs. He has four round-trippers for the season.

Markus Fergusson, also 3-for-3, doubled twice and homered to lead Edmonton. He had two RBIs.

In a late-night Saturday tournament game with Edmonton, the Lakers won that meeting 5-2 thanks to a standout pitching performance by Dillon Eaves. He went the distance, striking out nine and walking just two batters in seven innings. He gave up five singles and one double.

Kalispell also finished with a 3-1 mark in tournament play last year.

“Overall, we played pretty clean baseball,” Malmin said over the three days.

“We’ve had minimal errors. We made routine plays and executed defensive situations real well. I’m impressed with the progress of the kids.”

Kalispell (10-5) plays a single game at the Libby Loggers A on Wednesday, 6:05 p.m., followed by a trip to Billings for the three-day Memorial Day Tournament on Saturday.

“We pitched very well,” Eureka coach Brent Holder said. “Austin walked into a little trouble in the top of the ninth, then got himself out of it.”

Libby had runners on first and second with two outs, but the Rangers turned a double play to end the contest.

Guckenberg helped his cause by driving in one run. Kade Davis also had an RBI.

“Both teams were a little bit sloppy,” Holder said of the five errors each by both clubs.

“We left 11 runners on base today.”

Eureka had the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth inning, but Libby turned a double play and followed with a route infield play for the final out on a ground ball.
