State AA track: Individual titles for Boschee, Brenneman, Perrin, Griffith

BUTTE — Two senior standouts closing out their storied track careers on Friday were brilliant despite the less than ideal weather conditions.

Glacier’s Lexy Boschee won her fourth high jump title (5-8) and Flathead’s Tess Brenneman turned in a winning, personal- best effort in the long jump (18-9) on a cold, snowy and windy day at the Class AA state meet.

Boschee was hoping to break the high jump record (5-9 1/2, held by Kari Sheperd of Helena High, 1983).

“She had some great attempts at 5 9 1/2,” Glacier coach Jerry Boschee said.

“Her last two attempts, I thought she had it.”

She also placed second in the long jump (18-0).

Brenneman came within 2 1/4 inches of matching the state and school record held by Flathead’s Lexie Miller set in 1979.

“She jumped phenomenally,” Flathead girls coach Kirtlye Lohof said.

“That was on her last jump. She had already won it, but wanted to take one more.”

Brenneman added a fourth-place finish in the 400 (58.41)

Zach Perrin was the other Flathead winner on the day. He had the top time in the 3,200 (9:20.84).

Perrin won by 19 seconds.

Glacier’s Kyle Griffith, competing in just his third meet this spring and his second following knee surgery, won the long jump (21-6).

“He’s one of those special athletes,” Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said.

“When the chips are down, you want him on your team.”

Griffith won the state triple jump last year.

On the team front, Helena High, 28, Billings Senior, 27, Billings West, 26 1/2, Glacier, 19, and Flathead, 18, are the top five teams for girls.

“I like that (spot),” coach Boschee said of where the girls are sitting after the first day.

“I hope we can stay there.”

Billings West, 41, Bozeman, 30, Flathead, 29 3/4, Billings Senior, 26, and Glacier, 19 3/4, are the top five on the boys side.

“Our goal is to go out and PB,” Deck said for today.

“If they all do that, we’re happy.”

Weather conditions today call for temperatures in the 40s with an 80 percent chance for rain.

“I had a meeting with them,” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said.

“I don’t care what the conditions are like, the guy in the lane next to you has the same conditions you do.”

Hodge said if the weather is really bad, the whole meet moves indoor to Butte High School.

Regarding the title chase ...

“Billings West has a pile of sprinters,” he said.

“When they run the 100 and 200 (today), they should get a pile of points there.”
