BUTTE — Another trophy for the Glacier boys and the Flathead girls also left the Mining City with some hardware on the final day of the weather challenged Class AA state track meet.

The Glacier boys, third last year, wound up second this time on another bone-chilling day with temperatures just above the freezing mark on Saturday. The Wolfpack totaled 72 3/4 points.

Meet favorite Billings West took top honors with 97 1/2 points.

The Flathead girls placed third with 56 points. Billings Senior, 120 1/3, and Billings West, 80 1/2, finished 1-2.

“We had a heckuva day,” Glacier coach Arron Deck said.

“The kids came to compete. This group just believed. We knew where we wanted to be at the end of the year.

“We had adversity all year long,” he added.

“Injuries and different things. The kids stayed the course. The coaches did an unbelievable job keeping their athletes focused.”

Deck said the Wolfpack opened the final day “with a bang” when Josiah Bumgarner and Travis Komenda went second and third in the pole vault.

The points just continued to roll in after that.

Todd Ogden won the javelin (196-11) and Kyle Griffith was second in the triple jump.

Ogden is now a two-time state javelin champ.

Troy Fraley finished third in the 1,600 and Greg Dalton was also third, but in the 110 hurdles.

Western AA divisional champion Jake Tudahl came through with a fourth-place effort in the discus and Shelton Todd was fourth in the javelin.

“We didn’t have quite enough bullets to catch West,” Deck said.

“Everybody stepped up when their name was called. We’re proud of our boys.”

The Bravettes were led by the talented Kwyn Johnson on the last day. The junior set a AA state record in the triple jump (38-4 3/4).

“She actually had a couple of jumps that broke the record (37-7),” Flathead coach Kirtlye Lohof said.

Finishing third for the Bravettes were: Dani Davis in the 100 and 200, Tess Brenneman in the 300 hurdles and the 1,600 relay.

“They had a great weekend,” Lohof said of the Bravettes.

“They’re very happy. It’s a nice ending for our seniors.”

Lohof said this is the first state trophy for the Bravettes since the schools split five years ago.

The Flathead boys missed out on a team trophy by 4 3/4 points.

“I think in a couple spots, if we could have scored a couple points we could have been third, might have even gone to second,” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said.

“Everything else, we did well in.”

Flathead had athletes in the javelin, pole vault and discus, but did not score in those events.

“Our girls did really well,” Hodge said.

“Glacier took second ... that’s great for them. The Glacier boys had an excellent meet.”

For Flathead, Zach Perrin won the 1,600 (4:17.18).

John Collins was second in the 300 hurdles and Mathew Tokarz was third in the triple jump.

Flathead’s other high finish on the last day was a third in the 1,600 relay.

Nick James was fourth in the 110 hurdles.

The Glacier girls were ninth with 30 points. Lexy Boschee had the best showing for the Wolfpack on Saturday, placing third in the 100 hurdles.

Leah Cook was fourth in the triple jump.
