Williams, Jones help Wildcats finish 3rd in Class A state track
BOZEMAN — Columbia Falls’ Derrick Williams and Dan Jones each won titles on Saturday to help the Wildcats to a third place finish at the Class A state meet in Bozeman.
Williams won the 1,600 meter run with ease, finishing seven seconds ahead while crossing the line in 4 minutes, 26.87 seconds. Jones nearly matched his huge throw from divisional in the javelin, winning the title with a throw of 201 feet, 5 inches, nearly 10 feet farther than anyone else.
The Whitefish boys finished in fourth place, with Dakota Beatty and Keaton Grove taking the top two spots in the 110 hurdles. The Bulldogs’ 1,600 relay team finished second, less than half a second back of the leaders.
Whitefish’s Marlow Schulz swept the sprints for the girls, winning the 100 and the 200 to help Whitefish into third place at press time. The Bulldogs held a three-point advantage on Belgrade with just the pole vault to go. Whitefish also won the 400 relay.
Polson’s Aja Starkey finished second in the 3,200, Anna DiGiallonardo finished third in the 100 and Claudia Hewston finished third in the 800 to help the Pirates into eighth place. Columbia Falls’ Jinise Osborne finished third in the 3,200.
