Glacier Park leader retiring
Glacier National Park Superintendent Chas Cartwright intends to retire at the end of year, park spokeswoman Denise Germann said Friday.
Cartwright has been at Glacier since 2008 and has worked for the National Park Service for 25 years.
His tenure coincided with major portions of the park’s multiyear, $170 million overhaul of Going-to-the-Sun Road that began in 2006.
Cartwright also oversaw Glacier’s yearlong celebration of its centennial in 2010.
Cartwright came to Glacier from the superintendent’s position at Shenandoah National Park in 2008.
He started his Park Service career in 1987 in Utah at Canyonlands and Arches national parks and Natural Bridges National Monument.
Prior to that, he worked for the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.
Germann said Cartwright would not be available for an interview until after Thanksgiving.
His interim replacement will be announced in the near future.
