Author of park book discusses publication

The Flathead Valley Community College Continuing Education Center welcomes Ray Djuff Oct. 12.

Djuff will present “Glacier From the Inside Out: Creation of a Book from Concept to Printing.” His free presentation, which is open to the community, takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in room 144 of the Arts and Technology Building.

During his presentation, Djuff, an author and journalist, will offer insight into the creation of his soon-to-be released book, “Glacier From the Inside Out.” The book is a compilation of stories submitted by fellow Glacier National Park enthusiasts to “The Inside Trail,” the journal of the Glacier Park Foundation. The foundation consists primarily of former park concession workers and  others who love the park.

Djuff will address the challenges he and his co-editor Chris Morrison faced, including gathering 30 years of stories, deciding how to pare the selections for publication, figuring out how to categorize the selected stories into chapters, getting copyright releases for writers long since deceased, acquiring appropriate art and finding a publisher.

Djuff is co-producer of seven books about Glacier and Waterton national parks, including “View With a Room: Glacier’s Historic Hotels and Chalets,” “Waterton and Glacier in a Snap!” and “High on a Windy Hill — The Story of the Prince of Wales Hotel.”

His interest in the parks stems from four summers he spent working at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton during the 1970s and his annual park visits since. Djuff has a diploma in journalism and a degree in political science, with a minor in history from the University of Calgary.
